Things I Forgot I Loved From Ages 9-14
- Choke Cherries
- The words “Jack Pine Savage”
- Riding in cars on dusty back roads on sunny days
- Sleeping sinfully late into the morning
- The linemen’s boots my dad wore to work everyday
- The smell of puppies
- The quarter mile walk to the mailbox for love letters
- Falling asleep in an old camper after a long day of swimming and running
- Meeting boys from other towns
- Dancing to Bruce Springsteen on the deck with mom and my brother
- The prospect of falling in love

Fabulous Party Drinks
1. Mom's Punch: Totally PG, it's made with a few types of fruit juice, sparking water and floating globs of Sherbet. This is SO GOOD on a hot summer night, or at a teenage birthday party. It feels very decadent, and you can still see straight.
2. Apple Cider: Get some from the Farm stand in October, heat it up + throw in some cinnamon sticks and whole cloves. Show up at a party, dish it up (with shots of rum, if you please), become everybody's best friend. It's totally happened to me before.
3. Egg Nog: This stuff is sooooo good! I mean, you really, really shouldn't be planning on getting in a car afterward, since the drunk sort of hits you like a sandbag, but seriously. Who doesn't want to drink their daily calorie intake in one little glass?
4. Mint Julips: Anybody who makes Julip that is worth anything mass-produces it, making it the perfect party drink. If you do it right, with shaved ice, proper rum, and silver cups, you're all set to sit around the backyard in your big derby hats and discuss where you and your husband are going to vacation now that he has quit the financial industry.
5. Mojitos: This may just be because my secret crush makes really really good ones, but they're really good and summery. Although, they're not really quite as easy to mass-produce.-Plum Wine: Specifically, Plum wine mixers. Wine + sparkling water= another summer drink that is distinctly easier to make than a Mojito that is equally refreshing.
6. Champagne: I mean, come on. It is THE party drink, isn't it?
What about the rest of you? What are favorite drinks to produce in five-gallon bucket quantities?

My Most Annoying Habits
Apparently I have quite a few annoying habits, and I would like to assume I'm not the only one! Here are the things I do that drive other people crazy:
- Leaving half-drunken drinks around the house
- Excessively quoting from my favourite movies/TV programmes/books
- Forgetting to email or text people back
- Reminding people about the ridiculous things they did while drunk
- Making lists for EVERYTHING (but that's hardly surprising!)

Songs I'm Ashamed to Admit I like
Juice Newton: Queen of Hearts
Pussy Cat Dolls: When I Grow Up
Hilary Duff: Wake Up
ACDC: Thunderstruck
Aqua: Lollipop
What songs need to be buried deep in your Ipod?

Non-sexual Turn-offs
Sick people make me so sad. This is a definite character flaw on my part. It would be great to want to be helpful to them, or empathetic or something...but sickness incapacitates me with sadness. Especially in public. I'm sorry sick people, you do not need me crying in your presence. This will not make you feel better.
Brown Houses
You know, the ones with the wide, horizontal siding. They're in suburban neighborhoods, have a split-level entry. You just KNOW they have one of those awful brass, geometric light fixtures right inside the front door. There is carpeting for every wall-to-wall scenario and it's all cheaply made. Ew.
Smoking
Seriously. Gross. This makes me not want to be your friend or come to your house or ride in your car if you do it around me. It's stinks, is insanely unhealthy and costs a lot of money. I don't understand you, smokers of the world!
BBQ Sauce
What is in bbq sauce? Bad things. BBQ Sauce, you have an identity complex! Are you trying to be sweet? Salty? Smoky? Tangy? Tomato-y? Raisin-y? Molasses-y? I just think you are yucky and you ruin foods. You smell like a smoker's mouth.
Ani DiFranco
There is something about the sing-speak, poetry voice that really bugs me...and the slightly skewed, slightly too defensive political thing that just shuts me down when it comes to Ani. I'm going to take some slack for it, but intend to hold my ground. Sorry.
Polyester Clothes
What just turns your skin inside out?

Random Moving Movie Moments
Combining three of my favorite things--lists, movies, and alliteration. These few scenes never fail to get me crying, even though they have little to do with each movie's overall plot development. Since I personally hate knowing anything about movies that I haven't seen, I guess I should add a possible spoiler-alert disclaimer. But seriously, if you haven't seen these movies? NETFLIX THEM. Right now.
1. From Little Women: When Jo (Winona Ryder) runs downstairs after falling asleep in her attic writing alcove, she discovers her ill sister Beth's (Claire Danes) bed to be empty...and turns the corner to find that Beth is...ALIVE! sitting up, sipping broth.
2. From Apollo 13: A zoom shot of the NASA radio receiver, on the Lovells' bedside table, broadcasting static while Jim's (Tom Hanks) disabled spacecraft loses radio contact as it orbits the far side of the moon. Marilyn Lovell (Kathleen Quinlan), blurred in the background of the closeup, sinks to the floor, weeping.
3. From Dan in Real Life: Dan (Steve Carrell), who has fallen in love with his brother's girlfriend (Juliette Binoche), brokenly sings a verse of "Let My Love Open the Door" while gently strumming on the guitar.
4. From Sense and Sensibility: Elinor (Emma Thompson)--ever the beacon of sense--finally breaks down, pounding fiercely at her heart with a closed fist, when her overly emotional sister (Kate Winslett) chides her for hiding her true feelings for Edward.
5. From Cinderella Man: James Braddock (Russell Crowe) is hit by what should be a devastating blow in the boxing ring. Fearful that should he lose the fight his family will fall back into poverty, Jimmy slowly rises--unphased--and smiles at his opponent, images of his children having given him strength to remain standing.
What about you? Any random movie moments that get you running for a hanky?

Inappropriate Songs for my (Imaginary) Wedding
Although I'm not planning on getting married any time soon, I lot of my friends are tying the knot at the moment. I'm always interested about their choice of song for their first dance which got me thinking of different songs I would want. It turns out that
- Thriller by Michael Jackson (and yes, of course it would involve the proper dance)
- Big Star by Reel Big Fish
- Hypnotize by the White Stripes
- Business Time by Flight of the Conchords
- Danger! High Voltage by Electric Six

Animals I do NOT Like
Snakes: Because, dude. Where are your legs?
Eels: You're like snakes, but less esthetically appealing. And you're in the water which makes you even grosser.
Axolotls: A restaraunt in the town where I went to college inexplicably had a tank full of these digusting creatures in the dining room. Whenever I ate at said restaraunt I would always stop and mutter hateful things into the aquarium on my way to the bathroom.
Flying Fish: For the longest time, I fostered a bizarre nightmare involving being in a boat that was inundated by a school of flying fish and getting one caught in my hair. And then I read The Life of Pi and had my worst fears confirmed! Or as much as fears can be confirmed by a work of fiction.
Tapirs: Dude. You are not a proper animal. You are the bastard child of a threesome between a donkey/pig/elephant. Also, I suspect you smell really bad.

Things I Need To Do More Of
Here are a few things, from the small and mundane to the huge undertakings that I either want or need to do more of in my life.
- Sleep - No matter how much I get, I want to stay in bed longer than I can in the morning, and I know I don't get nearly enough during the working week.
- Exercise - Another thing I don't do as much as I should, despite my frequent good intentions. The gym ball sits in the corner of my room, seldom-used since I bought it.
- Travel - I want to see the world, at the moment, even though I'm better-travelled than quite a few people I know, I yearn to see more of it.
- Read - I spend far less time reading nowadays than I used to, probably because much of my time is taken up online now, of engaged in several activities at once. I'm trying to train myself into reading books regularly again, not just on public transport, and it's starting to work.
- Catch Up - With old friends, with new, with family and just with people and life in general, I should definitely do more catching up.
- Unwind - I need to spend less time messing around during the day so that I can work at a normal pace, finish early then unwind properly in the evening. Procrastination is no substitute for proper relaxation!
What do you need to do more of?

Things I Love About My House
Those sweet little bluebells that I didn't plant and that grow on the east side of the house, where the hose is, are a tiny detail about my house that just makes it cuter every time they show up. I know they are there, but I'm still always surprised when they bloom each summer.
The smart nooks and crannies built with a forethought to the design. In such a tiny, tiny house every square foot matters. They make me feel like I've got something that is special and secret and that there is a place to put it.
I love that the inside matches the outside. Outside: cream with green trim. Inside: medium gray with green trim. And the cleverly chosen hue of pumpkin yellow for the living room ceiling. Wow, that color combination sounds horrible in theory! But it's so warm and inviting and fresh in real life. It makes you feel like the lights are always on. I never could have come up with it on my own.
The new floors that my hubsbund and I installed ourselves. The first home renovation project we really ever completed together. We're still married and still in love even though he didn't know how to really use a table saw and I was a backseat-table-saw-operator.
I love that our friends join us every summer, dozens of times for backyard bar-bee-ques. Sometimes they end up being events with fifteen people or more, but my favorites are off the cuff with two or three friends who pop in at the last minute...and then the whole shebang ends with bonfire and beers and laughter under the night sky.
The best thing of all the things I love about my house is the feeling I get on occasion when pulling up to park in front after a day at work. I loiter for a minute in the car, look over to the house and think about the last six years spent in it. The fact that we haven't moved an inch, but we've gotten so far. I'm so lucky!

My Favourite Technological Advances
I love technology and can't even imagine life without all the gadgets we have to improve it! Here are my current favourites:
- Wireless internet. The internet just keeps getting better.
- iPods. A soundtrack for my life? Yes please!
- Dishwashers. I've always hated doing dishes, so love the fact that there's a machine to take care of them instead.
- Digital cameras. No more waiting for days/weeks/months to finally get a film developed (and then finding out that all of the photos were terrible anyway).
- Jet planes. Because I have better things to do than sit on a boat for weeks when I decide to travel to the other side of the world.

Things I Will Do Differently Next Time
- Next time that friend insists on using the word ¨retarded¨to describe something ridiculous/challenging/stupid, I´m going to point out how highly offensive and inappropriate that word is.
- I´m going to listen to my gut.
- During the job interview, I´m not going to pretend like occasionally working weekends and nights is cool. It is not, in fact, cool.
- I´m not going to be fooled by the term ¨garden apartment¨
- I´m not going to hide my affection for ¨Paris Hilton´s New BFF¨
- I´m not going to downplay the fact that I´m probably tougher than my date.
What are you going to do differently next time?

My Studying Survival Kit!
This weekend I had my final set of tutorials on my law course for this year, and now ahead of me is nearly four weeks of entirely undirected revision for exams. I have therefore been assembling my revision essentials, I am convinced I work better if I have all these things to hand!
- Coloured pens - preferably glittery gel pens, they make note-taking so much more fun, plus I find gel pens really comfy to write with and I always need to practice writing by hand ahead of any exams - I type almost everything!
- Coffee - Although I try not to cram late into the night like I used to, coffee helps me stay alert enough through the more boring bits!
- Notebooks - pretty ones, a new one for each subject. Revision is a good excuse for me to indulge my stationery obsession!
- Space - I spread all my books out so I can see them all at a glance, so I need lots of desk / floor / bed space when I'm working!
- Patience - That of other people, I get stressed and end up a completely useless person to live with!
- Snack food - As well as the jar of nutella I like to keep on my desk at such times, I also need a variety of snack foods to keep me going. I try and keep them healthy and preferably low calorie, as I eat a lot when I'm studying!
- Mindless TV - To watch when I've finished for the evening, it helps my brain to go to sleep when my body is craving it!
If you've got exams coming up, good luck! What are your studying essentials?

Things I Found During Spring Cleaning That Make Me Go ¨Hmmmm?¨
Lana, a.k.a. goatygoat, is a blogger, artist, student, and keen observer living in Seattle. She cultivates a raging coffee addiction, can embroider better than your grandma, and is pretty excited to have found fellow list-makers. 1. A gigantic floral suitcase that neither I nor my husband remembers obtaining or carefully tucking underneath the bed.
2. Panties that I bought ten years ago, that I've never ever fit into, and have never worn once.
3. A shrunken wool vest that I couldn't bear to part with, even after its stint with the clothes dryer made it too small to fit even one arm through the hole.
4. Twenty-six pencils tucked in various convenient places around the house. Seriously? The house isn't that big. We live in an Airstream.
5. The orange plastic hair pick that my mother gave me when I was a kid! I thought I'd lost it!6. Two books about rats.
7. My high school transcript.
8. A check from the state of Washington, and an apology letter for overcharging me for my car registration two years in a row.
9. A huge bag of clothes hangers in the mystery cabinet underneath the bed. We have a total of 36" of clothes-hanging space.
10. A postcard that I thought I sent months ago, and about which I'd been a little miffed at not receiving a reply.
11. Remember that bag of almonds that burst open in the kitchen about six months ago? Found a bunch of them in random places. Yum.
What ridiculous things have you found while cleaning?

Things I Plan To Never Do
I'm constantly making lists of things I want to do, so I thought I'd try something different for a change! Here are the things I plan to never do:
- Change my name. I like it the way it is!
- Go to the North or South Pole. Although it would be an adventure, I hate being cold and have accepted the fact that sub zero temperatures are not for me.
- Buy an expensive new car. Old cars have so much more character.
- Stop travelling. So much to see, so much to do!
- Go into outer space. This may be linked to a dream I had which involved exploding in space.

Things About My Mom That Are Awesome
credit- She can make a mean casserole. Chili beans + tamales + Doritos = South of the Border Yummers
- Her affinity for red pants. So there.
- The fact that she is not afraid to yell at the teenagers who just budged in line in front of you at Disney World. Not that I appreciated this at the time.
- The fact that she considers a road trip from Minnesota to Alaska an appropriate way to celebrate her retirement. To be followed by a year later by a month in New Zealand and Australia
- We both like to talk to animals.
- Her two favorite TV shows are Arrested Development and Antiques Roadshow
- When I asked her if she would be sad if I never got married and had children she said "Heavens no! I just want you to be happy!"

Music That Shaped Me
I'm a great believer in the power of music and most of my favourite bands and songs are those I associate with a particular time in my life. This is a list of bands and music that have had a real impact on my life.
- The Manic Street Preachers - I can trace my love of this band back to when I was around 9 or 10 and suffering from insomnia. I heard a track of theirs on the radio at some crazy hour of the night (well, crazy for a child anyway) I think it may have been Motorcycle Emptiness and decided they were great. Years later, I still love them and many of my closest friends are those I've met through the band in some way or another.
- Therapy? - This band were my icebreaker when I first arrived at university. I went along to the first Rock Society night at the students' union, shy and terrified, but when Troublegum was played, I mentioned I loved the song, was introduced to the society's resident Therapy? fan and that's pretty much how I broke the ice with the members of the society I would later become chair of for a year.
- Metallica - Another band I loved since being a kid, and the one that got me into "heavier" music. I think liking "alternative" music that barely anyone else at school enjoyed helped me to pretty much avoid having that early-teenage "must conform!" phase that so many go through. I simply didn't enjoy the music it was "cool" to enjoy, so I didn't bother trying.
- Zeromancer - My feel-good music, dancing around my room to this band has always instantly brightened up my day and they are still my music of choice to listen to whilst getting dressed for a great night out.
- Traditional goth bands such as Bauhaus - They were so much a part of my identity for such a long time and I still listen to them now (but there's a lot more colour in my wardrobe!) Despite supposedly being "depressing" music, these bands remind me of so many good times!
- VNV Nation - Starting to listen to electronic music coincided strongly with really getting to know myself properly and becoming the person I am today. I think it also helped encourage me to stop wearing so much black and again, there are so many good times I still associate with this type of music.
- Dir en Grey - This band remind me of 24 hot, frenzied hours in Berlin with no hotel room booked, wandering around all night seeing the sights and taking in the history of the place after an amazing concert!
What bands, songs and genres do you associate with the great times in your life, that influenced you as a person?

Jobs I Would Love to Have
I am not much of a career woman. I wish I was, but at 24 I am still without a "career"...I have had lots of mini careers (including events coordinator, writer for magazine, public servant & preschool teacher among others!) that have passed the time but I am still looking for the perfect career!!!
1. Translator- Despite the fact I speak two languages (oh how I wish it was more!) my written second language is crap. If it was better I could probably actually make money off of it. I am still working towards my next level of proficiency.
2. Photographer - No explanation necessary. I mean to get paid to take photos = awesomeness!
3. Bookstore owner- I have always wanted to work in a bookstore. But to own one would be so much better! Especially one with a cute, kitsch cafe attached! Not much need for an English bookstore where I am going though and what use would a bookstore with books I couldn`t read be?
4. Writer- My dream is to be a writer. Such a shame I am too lazy to edit my work or take the time to write more often. I do love it though so I do hope that one day the talent to do it will just come by and knock me on the head one day!
5. Stay at home mum- Some people (ie. career women!) would hate this but I like the idea. To supplement the fact that I stayed home with the kids I think running an Etsy business would be fun- just need to find a creative skill I have!
What careers have you had? What career do you want?
