Tiny Things That are Totally Satisfying
- Using up all the ink in a pen and then throwing it away
- Burping
- Finding money in the pockets of jeans you rarely wear
- Eating everything on your plate
- Getting a good grade on that paper you totally half-assed
- Walking out in the middle of a movie that is totally crap
- Actually having the perfect comeback for a snarky comment (at the time of the snarky comment, not two hours later)

My Little "Addictions"
- Coffee, I really am physically addicted to this one, I can't go a couple of days without it or I get headaches, but I love it so much!
- Checking my blog stats.
- Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook - I'm trying to beat a colleague's top score!
- Many, many TV shows, most notably Spooks (MI-5 to readers in the US), Gossip Girl, Heroes, Fringe, and so the list goes on.
- Re-watching my favourite movies - some of them I could see hundreds of times and never tire of!
- Cheese! When on diets this is the one "fattening" food I can never give up. Chocolate, cake, anything like that I can manage without, but cheese is just too good!
- Drawing stars on things, usually bits of scrap paper on my desk when I'm meant to be working, but I've accidentally drawn them on exam papers in the past!
- Researching things - if something interests me, I have to know as much about it as I can!
- Blogging! I haven't been doing it long, but if someone told me I could never blog again I think I'd be inconsolable!
What are your little addictions?

Biggest Rock Star Crushes
Mavis is a Communication Studies major, born and bred in sunny sunny Singapore. She blogs at Hello Marshmallow, which besides being one big ego trip, includes recommendations on music, films, art, local places to shop and eat, and other amusing stuff on the net. Mavis is a pessimist by nature, but tries only to post about things which make her happy. Sometimes she falls into the dark side, and discusses issues like poverty, education, and third world countries.
Sexy rock stars are everywhere, but somehow, I managed to fall in love with just a handful. What greater fantasy role to play than the lover of some outrageously good looking and idolised musician? Dream on, boys and girls, dream on…
- Nick Valensi of The Strokes
- Jack White of White Stripes
- Patrick Wolf
- Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys
- Brandon Boyd of Incubus
- Gwen Stefani of No Doubt
- Jacques Brautbar previously from Phantom Planet
- Tim Wheeler of Ash
- Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand
- John Lennon of The Beatles
- Lovefoxx of CSS
- Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs
- Damon Albarn of Blur
- Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT
Which lucky rock stars have managed to capture your heart?

Rain, Rain - I Guess You Can Stay
April showers are right around the corner, but here in East Texas the rainy season is already in full swing. Personally, I love the rain - it provides the perfect backdrop for a lot of my favorite activities, and the perfect excuse to indulge in others. Here's a list of things I like to do when the clouds are heavy and the puddles are deep.
- Drink peppermint tea on the porch.
- Crack open the window and read a book in bed.
- Play Scrabble by candlelight.
- Put on a raincoat and rubber boots and go for a walk, making sure to jump in every puddle I see.
- Bake a vegetable pot pie and a plate of brownies.
- Watch as many episodes of My So-Called Life as I can handle before dying of embarrassment.

Most Adventurous Activities
I'm always using the term "adventure" to describe situations or activities, and over the last few years I have actually done a few things which truly deserve this title:
- Went swimming with dolphins in water populated by giant squid
- Went snorkelling on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef
- Bungy jumped off a 35 metre bridge
- Survived a Rage Against the Machine concert with only a few bruises
- Rode an elephant in Thailand
- Spent two nights in a haunted jungle hut
- Camped illegally in France on two seperate occasions

My Personal Versions of Hell
- Sitting in coach, between an overweight, BO rocking, talkative evangelist and a crying baby. And maybe the baby is being changed. And maybe it has diarrhea.
- A three hour long staff meeting that does not even vaguely involve me, but requires me to nod frequently. And I´m really sleepy.
- Thong, support-top pantyhose, mini skirt and heels.
- Feeling like I need to throw up and not being able to.
- Trying to do my taxes

You Gotta Have Skills
Everyone has unique skills at which they excel. They may not be anything spectacular, or even that useful, but they should be a source of pride nonetheless! My awesome skills include:
- Moving through crowds (I always get in trouble for leaving people behind)
- Snorting derisively
- Choosing the best apples
- Arranging objects (especially by colour and/or size)
- Russian style dancing (like this)
- Quoting Family Guy at appropriate moments
- Winning the game Spoons
What are your unique talents?

Non-Awesome Things About my Exes

We´ve all dated a few lemons, right? Riiiight?! Let´s use this as an opportunity to examine all the reasons we´re better off with out them!
- High school boyfriend: Insisted on answering the phone, regardless of what activities we were currently engaged in. Like watching South Park.
- Freshman year boyfriend: Had nether regions that smelled like refried beans.
- College boyfriend: Afraid of talking on the phone to anyone even vaguely authoritative
- Ex-pat boyfriend: Everything was non-awesome, except for his shocking, shocking good looks.
- Travel boyfriend: Everybody thought he was gay. Including me when I first met him.
What were the less than spectacular things about the folks you´ve dated?

Duvet Days!
Sometimes a day off work to do very little is necessary and for me, those days are the Mondays after I've spent the weekend at law school. After a weekend of intensive learning (and usually a great night out on the Saturday too) a day of doing very little really helps to recharge the batteries!
I like to use these days to completely relax and be a little selfish! Some of my favourite ways to relax on my duvet days are:
- Sleeping in is essential - I like to stay in bed as long as possible, which is very easy in winter when it's really too cold to get up!
- I'll spend ages in the shower without having to worry that I'm making someone late for work.
- I'll eat a proper breakfast, something I don't tend to have time for on a normal work day.
- I can check my email and read blogs without the fear of my boss appearing over my shoulder!
- I like to drink posh tea whilst watching documentaries and whatever I can find in the "on demand" TV listings.
- I read something "easy" something that doesn't require too much thinking.
- If I feel like being a little more energetic I do some extra exercise, though nothing too strenuous!
- I'll cook something that requires more time than I usually have on an evening, such as a stew or something that requires extensive marinating.
What do you do on your days off work if you're at home on your own?

My Real Life and Fictional Heroes
Rachael is a native of the Sunshine State that has been uprooted to the Pacific Northwest by way of the Air Force. She blogs about her memoirs as an Air Force wife. She is a fellow list addict who loves God, people, places, books, film, music, photography, food, fashion, travel, animals, organic, decorating, shopping, and volunteering.
- She-Ra Princess of Power. She was my childhood Hero. I used to dress up like her (very creatively I might add, I remember a tube top, see through tutu, a dress used as a cape, and my mom's high heels) and reenact her entire transformation scene when she changes from Adora into She-Ra. This was a daily ritual for me.
- The Little Mermaid. Again with the reenacting, I would pretend I was Ariel in "Part of Your World."
- My parents. Their love and guidance has molded me into the woman I am today and I am thankful to have had such positive role models growing up.
- My husband, the Air Force helicopter pilot, and our friends serving in all branches of the military. I am grateful to all those in the armed forces (past, present, and future) that serve our nation, for their selfless acts of patriotism and heroism. Thank you to our veterans, servicemen/women, and their families for the sacrifices they have made for our freedom. I am proud to be a military wife!
- The entire cast of Heroes. This is by far one of the best shows on television right now. My two favorite characters are Sylar (okay technically he's a villian) and Hiro Nakamura. To quote Dwight K. Schrute: "I am not a hero. I am a mere defender of the office. You know who's a real hero? Hiro, from Heroes. That's a hero... Also, Bono."
Who are your Real Life and Fictional Heroes? Let us know by leaving a comment!

Recipes that Never Let Me Down
photo: deathbybokeh- Savory Tofu and Vegetables over Tomato Cous Cous
I found this recipe a few years ago in an issue of Vegetarian Times. Since then, it's graced my table on a weekly basis. The combination of leeks and carrots is awesome, but the real star of this recipe is marinated artichoke hearts. It tastes like heaven but takes less than 30 minutes to get to the table.
- Chickpea Cutlets
This is another quick and easy recipe, which can be found in the cookbook Veganomicon. I prefer to bake the cutlets for 30 minutes rather than fry them. While they're in the oven, I make a batch of garlic mashed potatoes to serve on the side. I'm drooling just thinking about it! - Strawberry Waffles
I recently blogged about this simple recipe, and I can already tell it's going to be a regular. Blueberries are actually my preferred fruit, but we were all out. - Chewy Chocolate Raspberry Cookies
Another Veganomicon recipe! (I had no idea so many of these were online!) This past summer, I made these every other day for two weeks and brought them to work, to picnics, to parties, mailed them in care packages, and ate them for every meal of the day. And you know what? I'm still not tired of them.
- Peanut butter and banana sandwiches, on toast.
The name of the recipe just about says it all. The one thing I have to add is: YUM!

Food I Refuse to Eat
I quite admire people who are happy to eat just about anything. I'm at the other end of the scale, with many different foods that I absolutely refuse to eat:
- Mushrooms - the taste, the texture, the smell... there is nothing good about mushrooms at all!
- Pine nuts - they always seem to sneak into all types of food, ruining what would otherwise be a nice meal
- Olives - every now and then I think that I've judged olives too harshly and decide to give them another try. Every time I regret it!
- Parsnips - nasty. Just nasty
- Celery - I especially hate eating celery by mistake when there's some hidden in a salad
- Shellfish - I think that any type of shell fish shouldn't really be considered a food

Awesome Family Idiosyncracies
- Grasshopper pie is served for dessert on the first and last day of the school year
- When it's your birthday, you get to use the 'You are Special Today' plate and the gold silverware.
- Whoever wins the game has to put it away
- Who ever breaks the cookie in half gets the second choice of which half they want
- Pizza is always consumed with soda. Otherwise, every meal is accompanied by a glass of skim milk
- All between-meal snacks must be a fresh fruit or vegetable
- Christmas gifts are opened one by one, in order from youngest to oldest
- The Christmas tree is put up on the day following Thanksgiving
- We do not say 'fart,' we say 'poof'
- Squirrel tails are a totally acceptable decoration for Christmas trees (!)

Looking Forward to Spring!
The first barbeque of the year - always a great event, though we need to tidy our garden up a little first!
Pimms! - A summer drink really, but I start drinking it as soon as the weather gets warmer.
Getting out of bed without shivering! - One of the biggest hindrances to me in the morning is a cold room.
Spring clothes - As great as they are, I'm getting fed up of wooly tights and thick coats now.
Sitting outside on a night out - so much nicer than cramming into a noisy pub.
Air shows! - Call me a geek, but I love it when the air show season starts!
The Easter bank holiday weekend - getting paid to stay home and eat chocolate, fabulous!
Not feeling the need to comfort eat all the time! Spring is definitely easier on the diet than winter is!

Best Sources for Inspiration
We all have moments where it seems our creativity has dried up. It doesn't matter if we're water color artists, website designers, lovelorn poets, or bio-chemists. Sometimes you can't wait for the muse to come calling - sometimes you have to go a-knocking at her door. Below are some of the places I look for inspiration when the going gets tough.
- Nature! The great outdoors are an unending source of inspiration. A long walk, a run through the woods, a creek where I can sit and jot down ideas while no one is looking. Solitude and a stretch of grass can go a long way.
- The Internet. Sure, a live connection can often spell disaster for the aimless and uninspired. (Wikipeida, can I please have back all those hours of my life?) However, every tool is a weapon if you hold it right and the Internet can be one of your best defenses against idle hands. Explore images on Flickr, find writing prompts, connect with other artists and makers and movers and shakers. (If you find a good shaker link, let me know.) Give yourself a time limit and when that limit is up, get off the Internet and start creating!
- Friends. Start a book club, a writers' group, a monthly craft night, a running coterie. Accountability is a strong motivator, and hanging out with your friends makes procrastination seem like a silly idea.
- Newspapers. I like to page (or click) through the news and save articles about weird places, strange coincidences, and interesting people. Later, when I need an idea, I pull out one of the stories I've squirreled away and use it as a jumping off place for something else.

Favourite Books from My Childhood
I've always loved books and since I was young I've needed to have at least one book to read (or reread) at all times. Here are some of my favourite books when I was growing up:
- Nancy Drew
- The Babysitters Club
- Bad Jelly the Witch
- The Chronicles of Narnia
- Rebecca's World
- Any books written by Tamora Pierce or Sheryl Jordan
- The Hobbit
- Goosebumps

Best Decisions I've Ever Made
- Not taking the posh office job in the suburbs. Because pantyhose don't suit me.
- Making daily sunscreen wearing a habit. I will be pale and droopy just like everyone else at 60, but damnit it, I will be wrinkle/skin cancer free!
- Ending a five-year relationship with a lovely, lovely guy who just wasn't right for me. And now we are good friends - I even set him up with his new lady!
- Buying a scooter when I lived in Taiwan. "Well hello, my good friend Freedom! What's up? I'm totally going to ditch that lame-o hanger on Crowded Asian Public Transport. She's such a bitch, yo."
- Giving up our television service. Hulu and movies = Best Ever. Then I don't get sucked into anything featuring Paula Abdul or that doctor named Meredith. (There! I said it! I'm not into Grey's Anatomy!)
- Giving up my lady-magazine subscriptions. And by that I mean Cosmo and People. Does not include Oprah or Real Simple. Because apparently I'm 45 on the inside.
- Drinking protein shakes for breakfast. Being a veteran vegetarian, you would think I'd be good about including beans/tofu/legumes in my diet. You would be incorrect.
- Switching to Depo. Dudes: no pills. No period. Awesome!
- Diving headlong into a serious relationship, with full knowledge that I was moving to a different country in two months. Because then he quit his job and moved to New Zealand with me!

My Favourite Ways to Procrastinate!
Dying my hair - I usually hate doing it, but when there's another task that needs to be done, it's suddenly not as bad!
Cooking an elaborate snack - Suddenly an omelette with about 12 different fillings that have to be cooked for different lengths of time becomes far more appealing than chocolate!
Playing the built-in Windows games - yes, Solitaire can be really good fun!
Re-watching last week's TV just because it's there.
Making near-endless amounts of tea.
Writing blog posts badly, saving them as drafts then never publishing them.
Reading all the blogs on someones blogroll.
Reading the Wikipedia article of the day, then clicking through to all the related articles and becoming an "expert" on a totally random subject.
Braiding my own hair.
Deciding that now is the perfect time to re-organise my wardrobe / desk / room / life!
